Most Tung OIl finishes contain very little tung oil and are rather pricey. Here are two wiping varnish recipes for an inexpensive substitute that yields a deep, rich protective coating to wood.

Formula I

• 1 qt mineral spirits
• 1 qt boiled linseed oil
• 1 qt oil-based polyurethane or spar varnish

Formula II

• 1 qt mineral spirits
• 1 qt gloss oil-based polyurethane or spar varnish

Apply to two coats of Formula I with a soft cloth. Finish with two or more coats of Formula II. Allow to dry to the touch between coats.
